Government exempts 200 SMS per day limit

You heard it right, The government of India has planned to waive the 200 SMS per day per SIM limit. All mobile subscribers can now send unlimited number of messages to any mobile phone. Till now subscribers were to send only 200 SMSes per day . As this SMS limit gave birth to the different new ways of sending SMS through Internet making serious security concerns TRAI now has waived all the mobile phone users from previous SMS limit.

TRAI has exempted machine-to-machine and person-to-machine messages from the limit of 200 SMS per day per SIM.

Although the telecom regulator, while issuing orders for exemption such SMSes has clarified that the mobile phones would be excluded from the definition of “machine” and such SMSes thus sent would not require manual intervention, market watchers said commercial SMS senders may take advantage of the situation. Now prepaid Users can also ask for Bill within 50 Rs

TRAI has announced that prepaid subscribers can now demand for itemised bill from telecom operators. Not more than Rs 50 should be charged for the bill. It is mandatory for telecom operators to provide the bill within 30 days of the customer’s request. Subscribers can also get detailed history of the tariff plans, available credit balance and details of any activated VAS on his number  anytime free of cost.

TRAI has also said that specific plan voucher shall be used for enrolling the subscriber into a tariff plan. Every voucher shall have only the price in rupees and price should be without any validity restrictions. A different color band will be used in the back of evry voucher. As of now there are 96% prepaid users and no bill is given for the usage and charged amount. (more…)

Mobile Number Portability turned successful with Over 8.5 million requestsMobile Number Portability (MNP) has become successful since it was launched in January. So far over 8.5 million mobile users has decided to change their service provider over the three months since the availability of the service. According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) by April-end, more than 8.54 million requests for MNP had come in from across the country.

Mobile phone users in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka seem to be most unhappy with their current service providers as more than 2.2 million requests for MNP originated from these states, TRAI said. (more…)

Government of India and Industry Unite to Support Mobile Broadband in IndiaThe Honourable Minister for Communications & Information Technology of India, the GSMA, the Cellular Operators of India (COAI) and the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced today that they will work together to help facilitate growth of Mobile Broadband services across India. Shri Kapil Sibal, the Honourable Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Rob Conway, CEO, GSMA, Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman, COAI and CEO, Bharti Airtel India & South Asia and Dr. J. S. Sarma, Chairman, TRAI outlined this collaboration during the ‘Mobile Broadband – India Empowering the Mobile Ecosystem’ seminar which took place at the Imperial Hotel in New Delhi today.

The growth of mobile communications in India is the result of a successful partnership between the Indian government, the regulator and the mobile community. This news demonstrates the shared commitment by all parties to address the need for nationwide broadband connectivity. The seminar focused on how Mobile Broadband, delivered using next-generation LTE technology, can help connect all citizens across urban and rural areas, to the Internet. This will further stimulate the Indian economy and provide people, especially those in rural communities, with access to online information, improving health, education and employment prospects, as well as providing access to financial and government services. BSNL comes out as looser in Mobile Number PortabilityBSNL, State owned telecom service provider is facing severe customers loss due to arrival of Mobile Number Portability. According to Sources, within the first 20 days of the launch of MNP, BSNL has lost more than 20,000 customers in the Punjab circle alone. However, around 3,000 subscribers have also joined its network during the same period making net customer loss to 17,000 . Poor infrastructure, lazy customer care, shoddy Voice quality and lack of Tempting VAS are major cause of this loss and now it would be a challenge for BSNL to overcome from it.

In Haryana, where MNP was launched on a trial basis on Nov 25, 2010, BSNL has lost over 33,000 connections. Vodafone and Tata DoCoMo have gained at the cost of the state-owned company, with the former adding almost 14,400 customers.
