3G services may lead to further loss of indian telcosIndian telecom industry is already experiencing a throat cut competition and profits are mitigating day by day. Increased competition from new telco’s who are initially only looking to poach subscribers and the expenditure incurred on 3G spectrum and on purchase of equipment will be an add-on to ongoing deficit of Indian telecom operators.

All telcos have already paid exorbitant amount for 3G auction and equipments. Bharti spent Rs 12,295 crore to get the 3G licence in 13 circles whereas RCom spent over Rs 11,000 crore and same is paid by Vodafone to acquire a licence in 10 circles. Vodafone also spent about $450 million to procure necessary 3G equipment. (more…)

indian telecom industry adds 12.29 mn gsm subscribers June

India’s continues its Drastic growth in Telecom market by adding ” 12.29 million new subscribers ” in June 2010, reported by COAI ( cellular operators’ association ) on Friday. Now with this addition of 12.29 mn India has a total GSM cellular subscriber base of 456.58 million.

Bharti Airtel, India’s number one GSM operator, added three million new users in June, taking its total subscriber base to 136.6 million. Airtel is still is the telecom leader with a 29.92 per cent market share. on the other hand Vodafone Essar, country’s third-largest mobile phone operator added 2.71 million subscribers during the month, taking its subscriber base to 109 million. Vodafone has market share of 23.89 per cent.

Sixth-ranked Idea Cellular added 2.15 million users in June while Aircel added 1.6 million new customers. State-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL added 1.09 million and 44,413 new users respectively, taking their subscriber base to 66.88 million (BSNL) and 4.90 million (MTNL).

Two days Ago we posted about the upcoming 2nd Managed Services Event in Delhi based on telecom expense management who started today with Presence of Major Telecom Deligates. Inaugurated by Shri PJ Thomas, IAS, , secratery, DOT, Ministry of Communications India Managed services in Telecom is expected to be a 4.2 billion dollar business opportunity by 2014, according to  experts at a conference on the subject here.  Department of Telecom Secretary P. J. Thomas said Managed Services was emerging as a new science. “This is a great development in the great telecom story” he added inaugurating the event.

Telecom sells like fish” but the operators have found that it is more cost beneficial to employ fishermen to catch the fish and for them to focus on marketing it,  said Bharti Airtel senior VP for Networks Shyam Prabhakar Mardikar. (more…)
