Government of India and Industry Unite to Support Mobile Broadband in IndiaThe Honourable Minister for Communications & Information Technology of India, the GSMA, the Cellular Operators of India (COAI) and the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced today that they will work together to help facilitate growth of Mobile Broadband services across India. Shri Kapil Sibal, the Honourable Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Rob Conway, CEO, GSMA, Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman, COAI and CEO, Bharti Airtel India & South Asia and Dr. J. S. Sarma, Chairman, TRAI outlined this collaboration during the ‘Mobile Broadband – India Empowering the Mobile Ecosystem’ seminar which took place at the Imperial Hotel in New Delhi today.

The growth of mobile communications in India is the result of a successful partnership between the Indian government, the regulator and the mobile community. This news demonstrates the shared commitment by all parties to address the need for nationwide broadband connectivity. The seminar focused on how Mobile Broadband, delivered using next-generation LTE technology, can help connect all citizens across urban and rural areas, to the Internet. This will further stimulate the Indian economy and provide people, especially those in rural communities, with access to online information, improving health, education and employment prospects, as well as providing access to financial and government services. indian telecom industry adds 12.29 mn gsm subscribers June

India’s continues its Drastic growth in Telecom market by adding ” 12.29 million new subscribers ” in June 2010, reported by COAI ( cellular operators’ association ) on Friday. Now with this addition of 12.29 mn India has a total GSM cellular subscriber base of 456.58 million.

Bharti Airtel, India’s number one GSM operator, added three million new users in June, taking its total subscriber base to 136.6 million. Airtel is still is the telecom leader with a 29.92 per cent market share. on the other hand Vodafone Essar, country’s third-largest mobile phone operator added 2.71 million subscribers during the month, taking its subscriber base to 109 million. Vodafone has market share of 23.89 per cent.

Sixth-ranked Idea Cellular added 2.15 million users in June while Aircel added 1.6 million new customers. State-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL added 1.09 million and 44,413 new users respectively, taking their subscriber base to 66.88 million (BSNL) and 4.90 million (MTNL).

Bharti Airtel international will Invest $100 Million In Malawi Bharti Airtel, who became the world’s fifth largest mobile player With recent acquisition of Zain Telecom’s African business is now planning to invest over US$ 100 Million in the Malawi telecommunication industry in the next three years. Company has also revealed that by this investment and business plan it targets to achieve 100 million subscribers and $5 billion revenue by 2012-13. Bharti Airtel now owns 100 percent of shares in Zain Malawi.

“We plan to invest $100 million in Malawi in the next three years to improve coverage and reach out to Malawi’s rural farmers  and help the country’s economy grow,” said Manoj Kohli, chief executive officer, Bharti Africa in in the Malawi’s capital Lilongwe

Kohli also revealed the company’s wish to improve local call rates to at least 250 minutes. Malawi currently hovers around 40 minutes of talk time for users. In India, he referenced, subscribers utilize between 400 and 500 minutes per month. (more…)

Uninor eyes 8 percent indian Telecom market share by 2018 Uninor, a joint venture between realty firm Unitech and Norway-based Telenor has unveiled its vision “to achieve eight percent market share in India by 2018″ by resorting to unique marketing strategies & lucrative talk plans. From the Start Uninor has a slightly different Perspective to build up its Brand and according to uninor they will concentrate on the development and delivery of voice services, while other new entrants look to differentiate themselves with data service.

Uninor started its operations in India in December last and has licenses to start operations in all the 22 telecom circles of India, is now present in 13 service areas. Accepting the intensifying competition in the country’s wireless services sector, Ever decreasing average revenue per user (ARPU) and an increasing number of operators in India’s mobile market are not deterring Uninor’s management, which is taking a long-term view as it plans its operational rollout.
