Government of India and Industry Unite to Support Mobile Broadband in India

The Honourable Minister for Communications & Information Technology of India, the GSMA, the Cellular Operators of India (COAI) and the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced today that they will work together to help facilitate growth of Mobile Broadband services across India. Shri Kapil Sibal, the Honourable Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Rob Conway, CEO, GSMA, Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman, COAI and CEO, Bharti Airtel India & South Asia and Dr. J. S. Sarma, Chairman, TRAI outlined this collaboration during the ‘Mobile Broadband – India Empowering the Mobile Ecosystem’ seminar which took place at the Imperial Hotel in New Delhi today.
The growth of mobile communications in India is the result of a successful partnership between the Indian government, the regulator and the mobile community. This news demonstrates the shared commitment by all parties to address the need for nationwide broadband connectivity. The seminar focused on how Mobile Broadband, delivered using next-generation LTE technology, can help connect all citizens across urban and rural areas, to the Internet. This will further stimulate the Indian economy and provide people, especially those in rural communities, with access to online information, improving health, education and employment prospects, as well as providing access to financial and government services. indian telecom industry adds 12.29 mn gsm subscribers June
0India’s continues its Drastic growth in Telecom market by adding ” 12.29 million new subscribers ” in June 2010, reported by COAI ( cellular operators’ association ) on Friday. Now with this addition of 12.29 mn India has a total GSM cellular subscriber base of 456.58 million.
Bharti Airtel, India’s number one GSM operator, added three million new users in June, taking its total subscriber base to 136.6 million. Airtel is still is the telecom leader with a 29.92 per cent market share. on the other hand Vodafone Essar, country’s third-largest mobile phone operator added 2.71 million subscribers during the month, taking its subscriber base to 109 million. Vodafone has market share of 23.89 per cent.

Sixth-ranked Idea Cellular added 2.15 million users in June while Aircel added 1.6 million new customers. State-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL added 1.09 million and 44,413 new users respectively, taking their subscriber base to 66.88 million (BSNL) and 4.90 million (MTNL).
Bharti airtel adds 2.85 million new mobile users in January
1Bharti Airtel, India’s no. 1 mobile operator adds 2.85 million new mobile subscribers in January 2010. Now Airtel has a total of 121.7 million user-base. Third-ranked Vodafone Essar, controlled by Vodafone, signed up 2.74 million mobile users in January, to boost its total to 94.1 million, Fifth-ranked Idea Cellular gained 2.28 million mobile subscribers, taking its total to 59.9 million.
