 Vodafone to Launch 3G Services in India by next month Vodafone Essar, India leading telecom operator, has announced that its 3G services will be rolled out by the end of this fiscal year. Vodafone announced this just after the 3G roll out of Aircel. The company has confirmed that 3G roll out will be on a city-wise basis and not state-wise.

“We have a 3G-ready network, currently in optimisation which we will be launching very quickly,” said, Vodafone Essar Director, Naveen Chopra.

Presently, trials are on and the service is expected to be launched in a phased manner by March. The firm has the capability of servicing enterprise customers for fixed line, Mr. Chopra said, adding “we have over 95,000 km of optical fiber and a 3G-ready network.” (more…)

3G video call starts again, telcos gets time till July 31 to provide interceptionIndian Telecom operators with 3G services got a major relief from the government as The Department of Telecom (DOT) said that it will allow third generation (3G) video calls on mobile networks and asked the companies to demonstrate the services by July 31

Before this, telecom operators offering 3G mobile services were asked to stop the 3G video call service as security agencies were not able to intercept the video calls on real time basis.

“After examination of various options, it has now been decided to permit carriage of calls on mobile networks subject to an undertaking being provided by the concerned service providers that they shall demonstrate the required capability by July 31, 2011,” (more…)

Tata DOCOMO 3G tariff plan post-paid and pre-paid subscribers Tata DOCOMO, the first private telecom operator to launch 3G services in India has finally revealed Docomo 3G tariff details. Presently the services have been launched in 9 circles ( Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai), Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya-Pradesh-Chhattisgarh and UP (West) ) and the company is in talks with PSUs BSNL and MTNL to ink roaming pacts for the rest of the circles.

“We plan to cover all the circles through our roaming pacts by the end of this year,” said Deepak Gulati, Executive President, Mobility, Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL).

Tata Docomo 3G services tariff plan range from Rs 350 to Rs 2000 including monthly limit on minutes, maximum speed and data usage. 3G Video calls will be priced at 0.66 paisa per second ( ~ Rs. 40 per minute! ) This plans will be available with effect from 10 November 2010. (more…)

3G services may lead to further loss of indian telcosIndian telecom industry is already experiencing a throat cut competition and profits are mitigating day by day. Increased competition from new telco’s who are initially only looking to poach subscribers and the expenditure incurred on 3G spectrum and on purchase of equipment will be an add-on to ongoing deficit of Indian telecom operators.

All telcos have already paid exorbitant amount for 3G auction and equipments. Bharti spent Rs 12,295 crore to get the 3G licence in 13 circles whereas RCom spent over Rs 11,000 crore and same is paid by Vodafone to acquire a licence in 10 circles. Vodafone also spent about $450 million to procure necessary 3G equipment. (more…)
