Airtel 3G launches in NCR – Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Noida

Bharti airtel, India’s leading telecom company today launched its 3G mobile services in the National Capital Region spanning Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Noida. The launch of 3G services in NCR is backed by a robust network powered by 1800 plus 3G sites, which is so far, the strongest 3G network in the region by any mobile operator and will ensure a seamless 3G experience for 76 Lakh airtel mobile customers in the region.
Airtel also announced that it has achieved the milestone figure of around Half a Million 3G customers across the country – having launched a little over a month ago. Airtel’s Third Generation services are already in the 7 cities of Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore, Manipal, Udipi and Jaipur and will be available in all 13 3G-license circles by end of March 2011. Customers can choose from airtel’s easy-to-understand 3G tariff plans, which have been crafted to prevent ‘bill shock’ and help customers monitor their consumption of data with personalised data usage limits and alerts. MTNL Delhi reduces price for Unlimited 3G 2500 Data Plan

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd ( MTNL ) has announced a change in its existing 3G data plan for its postpaid customers of Delhi region. The erstwhile plan named as “3G 2500 data plan” is now changed in “3G Freedom Unlimited 1800” .
With this plan customers will continue to enjoy same unlimited free data access, free video calls and free local video call minutes but surprisingly with lower price of Rs 1,800 .

3G services in metro cost atleast 700-900 Rs/month

Bharti Airtel , Indian Telecom Market leader cautioned that 3G mobile services will not come cheap, especially for subscribers in metros, as service providers had to pay unexpected heavy fee for spectrum. “Take the example of Delhi itself, or Mumbai. The amount for spectrum that has been charged is close to Rs 3,500 crore.
according to Sunil Mittal, Chairman Bharti Group. “To recover heavy license fees and input cost, it would be charged atleast Rs 700-900 per month,” On the Qs of 3G launch, Mittal said, “We will launch 3G Some time later this year. We are just waiting for the spectrum allocation, which is promised in September, a few months after that.”
In the rest of the circles, specially in the C-category, the tariffs may not be very high. “The pricing of subscriber tariffs have to be based on the input cost. Any industry relies on input cost and here, the input cost is spectrum and it has gone high,” he said. (more…)
